I would suggest to replace the 555 with a UC3844. Same thing, just simpler. Only one resistor and one capacitor required to set the output frequency. Optionally one could also set the current limit, as this IC is a current mode PWM controller by nature. This would, of course, save the transistors from transformer saturation during an overload condition.
